During pregnancy a woman has to take good care of her bone health and also that of the baby. A woman needs to take sufficient calcium intake and also follow some guidelines to maintain her health as it was pre-pregnancy. Following these guidelines will not only help preventing the risk of bone complications like osteoporosis, even after multiple pregnancies.
The baby growing inside the mother’s womb needs plenty of calcium supply to develop its skeleton. In the case of mother not taking enough calcium, her baby draws what it needs from the mother’s bones. Teenage mothers are more at risk for bone loss during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding also has a great impact on mother’s bones. Studies show that women lose 3 to 5 percent of their bone mass during breastfeeding. The baby growing in its mother’s womb needs plenty of calcium to develop its skeleton. This need is especially great during the last 3 months of pregnancy. If the mother doesn’t get enough calcium, her baby will draw what it needs from the mother’s bones. The amount of calcium the mother requires is dependent upon the amount of breast milk produced and the length of breastfeeding period. The following are the guidelines that pregnant women must follow.
Pregnancy also helps maintain the calcium reserve of most women. Pregnant women tend to absorb calcium from food supplements better than other women. Women produce more estrogen a hormone that helps in protecting bones. Most of the bone loss during pregnancy is usually repaired.
Improve calcium intake – Women are advised to increase the intake of dairy and other products that are full of calcium and also take calcium supplements. Foods which are loaded with calcium are dark green, leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, collard greens, and bok choy, canned sardines and salmon with bones, tofu, almonds, and corn tortillas, foods fortified with calcium, such as orange juice, cereals, and breads. Apart from this doctors also prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements which has a good composition of calcium. The National Academy of Sciences suggests that pregnant and breastfeeding women should take 1,000 milligrams of calcium every day.
Improve intake of vitamin D- Research shows that proper intake of vitamin D during pregnancy lowers the risks of a lot of pregnancy complications. Prenatal vitamins prescribed by the doctors usually contain the required dose of vitamin D. Less complications obviously lead to better health during pregnancy.
Exercise- Physical exercise has a positive impact on bone density. Just like muscles bones become stronger with exercise. Regular exercises, particularly weight-bearing exercises, help in maintaining strong bones But exercise should be done with the consent of the doctor. Obstetricians and gynecologists exercise helps in curing common pregnancy problems like back-aches, bloating, and swelling and also helps in preventing gestational diabetes.
